How to read a puff count (and why the number lies)

By Editorial.Published on 15 Oct 2026.Delhi NCR Desk

Walk past any shelf and the biggest number on the box is the puff count: 5,000, 12,000, 23,000. It reads like a fuel gauge. It is closer to a marketing compass.

What the number actually counts

A puff count is an estimate produced in a lab: one puff, a fixed duration, a fixed draw strength, a full battery and a full reservoir. Real usage is messier — longer drags, colder weather, chain-puffing and a half-charged battery all pull the real figure down.

Compare ratios, not totals

Two devices with the same printed count can behave completely differently. What you actually want to compare is millilitres of liquid and milliamp-hours of battery against that count. A high puff number with a small tank is simply a longer stretch of small draws.

What to look at instead

  • Nicotine format — salt versus freebase changes the throat hit far more than the puff count does.
  • Coil and mesh — this decides whether flavour survives to the last third of the device.
  • Charge cycle — how many top-ups the battery is realistically rated for.

The number on the box is the beginning of a question, not the answer. Read the spec sheet, trust your own two-day impressions, and treat any figure that sounds too round as decoration.
